3 hours walking tour to explore the tastes of local food shops and cafes.
There are many local food shops, restaurants and cafes which have a long history and have been loved by locals but most tourists just walk past them because no one explains. This tour makes it happen that people can truly 'experience' local food culture and meet proud local people behind it.
You will visit
- Local high-end supermarket who sells quality and unique foods from small and medium food businesses all over Japan
- Japanese chocolate shop which pursues to make 'chocolate that fits Japan', which has more than 10 shops in Japan and has
history of more than 15 years - Soba confectionary shop which started in the
Edo era (17th-19th century) - Old style cafe & restaurant where is often filled with locals of senior age
- A fish‐shaped pancake filled with bean jam
- Japanese pickles at Nishiki Market pickles shop
- Japanese knife shop
- Japanese kitchenware shop
- Local healthy food grocery
- Japanese spice shop
- Food court of a
department store where you find thousands of foods

Excellent
Overall the class was fantastic. The market tour was a real highlight. Being able to wander around the market with a guide who could answer all our questions and explain what we were seeing was really good. The positive relationship the guides had with many of the stall holders was impressive. The cooking class was great fun. The instructions were clear, easy to follow and had everyone involved very quickly. A great way to get some insights into Japanese and particularly Kyoto lifestyle and culture. All up, highly recommended.

Absolutely wonderful!

Brilliant!
Friendly hosts who guided us through the market then the cooking process. Lovely clean studio with full views across the rooftops of the Nishiki market. Sake tasting and great company topped off the experience. Highly recommended.

Fabulous
Started with an interesting and helpful review of the market and the the meal preparation. The teacher went above and beyond just the meal items, giving us information about equipment and the individual subtle differences between the spices and the liquids.
